IOMed and Chinese Permanent Mission to the UN Co-host International Law Week Side Event

On 29 October 2025, the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) and the Permanent Mission of China to the UN co-hosted a side event during the International Law Week under the theme “IOMed: A New Platform for Enhancing Global Governance under the Rule of Law” at the UN Headquarters in New York.
 
The side event drew participants from over 60 countries and international organizations.
 
Recalling the journey to establish the Organization, Deputy Secretary-General of IOMed Dr. SUN Jin introduced to audience of the event the mission of IOMed, its scope of cases and composition of its Panels of Mediators. He emphasized that IOMed aims to offer party-owned, inclusive, affordable and efficient dispute resolution through mediation, and is designed to complement existing dispute settlement mechanisms as a new public good for the international community.
 
Dr. Sun highlighted IOMed’s commitment to support its members states in capacity building and promote knowledge sharing on mediation, especially for developing countries. He also expressed the hope for more countries to join the IOMed family.
 
Recognizing its unique value, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the UN Ambassador GENG Shuang said that IOMed embodies the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and will help maintain a harmonious and stable international order. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to work with other member states for the steady development of the Organization.
 
Representatives of Contracting States and Signatory States to the IOMed Convention, including Pakistan, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Serbia, also gave remarks at the side event, underscoring their shared belief that mediation remains indispensable for sustainable peace and security. Representative of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) acknowledged the establishment of IOMed as testament to the international community’s recognition of the relevance of mediation, and affirmed UNCITRAL’s readiness to cooperate with IOMed.
